Connecting via CDR
Connecting via Consumer Data Right (CDR) helps us provide more accurate savings estimates — based on how you actually use electricity, not averages.
- No passwords required
- You stay in control and can withdraw consent anytime
- Takes about 3–5 minutes
It’s simply the most accurate way to compare electricity plans.
Using Consumer Data Right (CDR) to get better energy savings
When you compare energy plans with One Click Switch, we give you the option to securely connect your energy usage using Australia’s Consumer Data Right (CDR).
This helps us give you far more accurate savings estimates - based on how you actually use electricity - not averages or assumptions.
Here’s what that means, how it works, and why it’s safe.
What is Consumer Data Right (CDR)?
Consumer Data Right (CDR) is an Australian Government initiative that gives you the right to safely share your data with trusted, accredited providers - if you choose to.
In energy, CDR allows you to securely share your electricity usage data for a specific purpose for a limited period of time, with full control and the ability to withdraw consent at any time.
You never share your password, and you’re always redirected to your existing energy provider to approve access.
Why connecting via CDR gives you better results
Most comparison sites rely on reference prices or broad averages. Reference prices assume an “average” household - but most households aren’t average.
That can be wildly inaccurate if you:
- Use more power at night
- Work from home
- Have solar
- Have (or could benefit from) time-of-use pricing
- Have higher or lower usage than the “average” household
By securely retrieving up to 12 months of your real usage data, we can:
- Calculate what each plan would have cost you
- Estimate savings based on your actual habits
- Avoid under- or over-estimating your bill
Bottom line: CDR lets us compare plans using your real numbers, not guesses.
How One Click Switch uses your CDR data
We use up to 12 months of your usage data only to:
- Calculate personalised plan comparisons
- Estimate realistic savings
We do not use it for:
- Marketing unrelated products
- Selling your data
- Accessing your account
- Making changes to your service without approval. Switching is always optional and initiated by you.
Your data is handled securely and in line with strict CDR rules.
What data we access, and what we don’t
Data we do access
- Your electricity usage history (e.g. how much energy you use and when)
- Meter and tariff information needed to calculate costs accurately
- Current plan information (rates, fees, discounts) in order to calculate how much you would pay on your current plan
Data we never access
- Your online account login or password
- Your credit card or payment details
- The ability to make changes to your account
- The ability to switch you without your consent
At no point do you, or we, “log in” to your retailer through One Click Switch.
Who is Fiskil?
Fiskil is an accredited Consumer Data Right data provider regulated by the ACCC and Data Standards Body.
They specialise in securely connecting consumers to banks and energy retailers under Australia’s CDR framework. They are independently accredited under CDR and meet strict security and privacy requirements.
One Click Switch uses Fiskil so we can offer CDR access for all consumers and all Australian energy providers. When you connect to your provider, you will receive 2 emails from Fiskil; the first when consent is granted, and the second when consent is revoked (automatically after 20 minutes).
How does consent work?
There's a few steps to granting consent for us to securely retrieve your energy usage:
- Enter your email to manage your consent: This is simply to manage or revoke your consent. We will never use this to email you or market to you.
- Authorise data sharing via Fiskil: You need to approve for Fiskil to securely connect to your energy provider to access your usage data (on your behalf).
- Authorise data sharing via your electricity provider: You'll be redirected to your energy retailer, where they will ask for the email address or mobile number associated with your electricity account. They'll send you a One-Time Password (OTP) to verify your identity and confirm your consent for the data access. We won't need your password.
How long does consent last?
One Click Switch only requests consent for up to 20 minutes; that's enough time for us to securely access your usage data, perform our calculations and show you your savings estimates. Once consent is automatically revoked after 20 minutes, we can no longer access your energy data without your consent again.
Do I have to connect via CDR?
No - it’s completely optional.
If you prefer, you can still compare plans using a recent bill upload, enter usage details manually, or the quick estimate method.
These options work, but they’re usually less accurate, based on shorter snapshots of data, and are harder to model for different tariff types.
CDR is simply the most accurate and easiest option if you’re happy to use it.
When we can't connect via CDR
There are a few scenarios where we won't be able to connect to your provider to access your usage data:
- If you're on an embedded network: Some apartment blocks force tenants to remain on a specific electricity provider.
- If you have been with your current electricity provider at the service address for less than 3 months: Our calculations works best when we have at least 3 months of your usage data. So you can't connect to your provider if you haven't been with that provider at that address for at least 3 months. You can still use bill upload in this case to get a personalised estimate.
- If the service address is in a state where you don't have choice of providers - eg: WA (Synergy), NT (Jacana) or North Queensland (Ergon).
- Our CDR comparison is currently only available for residential properties (not business)
- CDR is currently only available for Electricity (not Gas). For Gas, you can still upload a bill to get personalised estimates and comparisons.
CDR in summary
Connecting via CDR is:
- Secure and safe: with some of the most tightly regulated data-sharing frameworks in Australia
- More accurate: using your real usage to provide better savings estimates
- Easy and fast: In under 3 minutes, you can find savings for your home
There's no obligation to switch, just better information — so you can make a better choice.
